Dwayne McDuffie is a comic books and animation writer. He has worked for Marvel Comics, Harvey Comics, Archie Comics and is currently working with DC Comics, but some of his best known work include stories, characters and settings he created for Milestone Media, a subsidiary of DC Comics he co-founded with other African-American writers in an effort to portray and represent minorities better in comic books. He has also worked for Warner Bros. Animation, where among many works, he created Static Shock, a series in which he merged several Milestone Media characters into Bruce Timm and Paul Dini's DC animated universe, to which he made further contributions to the point of writing several pivotal stories including the final episode of Justice League Unlimited, the last series included in that continuity.

[edit] Early life

As revealed in the autoboigraphy from his homepage, Dwayne was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan and attended The Roeper School. After that, he conitinues his education attending undergraduate and graduate programs at The University of Michigan, and then film school at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.

The site also reveals that before being known as a writer in the comic books media, he co-hosted a radio comedy program, while moonlighting pseudonymously as a freelance writer for stand-up comedians and late-night television comedy programs.

[edit] Marvel Comics

He started his career in the 9th. art by pitching a sitcom flavored story for Marvel Comics about Damage Control, a construction company that repairs property damage caused by metahuman riots. It was published in Marvel Comics Presents #19 (may 1989) and among several stories Dwayne wrote for Marvel, he did three miniseries following their misadventures: Damage Control Volume 1, Damage Control Volume 2 and Damage Control Volume 3.

After two and a half years writing for Marvel he wrote the first four issues of the Monsters in My Pocket comics for Harvey Comics as a paralell work. Some characters of the franchise like Warlock and Vampire in McDuffie's stories show some similitudes with Marvel characters like Magneto and Professor X. In general the conflict of the story is very similar to the X-men's.

[edit] Millestone Media

After a couple of works for DC Comics, he co-created Millestone Media award wining line of comic books within DC. There, in mid-1993 he started working as editor in chief and writing several stories for a period of two and half a year until the subsidiary company reduced it's publishing business. In Millestone, before any titles were published he participated largely in the writing of a "guide" that provides the background of the characters and settings of Dakotaverse, the in-universe where most of the published stories take place. McDuffie created a great deal of characters for the company, including Static and the characters that would later appear in Statick Shock, an animated series about the character.

[edit] Animation

From 2000 to 2006 McDuffie's fame as a writer continues to grow, only now mainly in animated series. One of his most well known work is Static Shock, in which he worked as storywriter and story editor and reintroduced Static to a different audience for Kids' WB!. With guest stars like Batman and The Joker, the series was placed within the DC animated universe, the continuity of some series created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm including Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond.

In 2001 McDuffie also wrote some episodes for Justice League, yet another series placed in the same continuity. Towards the end of the second season he becomes the most recurring writer of the series. Several of his stories are characterized by setting story arcs, the relationship development between the main characters and concreting the continuity ties of all the series of DC animated universe. For the third season of Static Shock, he co-wrote a two part episode featuring the characters of the Justice League and later, for the third season of Justice League, he wrote a story in which a 60 years old Static made a cameo in another two part episode set in the Batman Beyond era. He pushed further continuity ties in the last six episodes of the third season. In Epilogue, the last of those episodes, he established bonds among Amanda Waller, a major villain in the season three storyline, Bruce Wayne and Terry McGinnis form Batman Beyond.

In 2003, McDuffie and co-writer Alan Burnett were awarded the Humanitas Prize in Children's Animation for Static Shock's episode Jimmy, which deals with bullies and gun violence in highschools. In 2003 and 2004 the series Dwayne and other creators of the series were nominated to daytime Emmy awards. In 2005, he was nominated for the Writers Guild of America award in animation, with Rich Fogel and John Ridley for the Starcrossed episode of Justice League.

[edit] Return to comics

2006 marks McDuffie's big return to comics. In 2006 he returned with Marvel Comics' miniseries Beyond!, and, following a Special issue, as the regular writer of Fantastic Four, which he will write through issue 553. In 2007 McDuffie took up the reigns as writer of Justice League of America (vol. 2) from #13, after Brad Meltzer, which he is scheduled to write for as long as he wants.
